Conditions We Commonly Treat

Anxiety disorders have been common struggles for a lot of people. While the median age of onset is 30 years old, a very broad range exists for the spread of age at time of onset. An estimated 19.1% of U.S. adults had any anxiety disorder in one year. Prevalence of any anxiety disorder was higher for females (23.4%) than for males (14.3%). An estimated 31.1% of U.S. adults experience any anxiety disorder at some time in their lives.

An estimated 31.9% of adolescents had any anxiety disorder. Of adolescents with any anxiety disorder, an estimated 8.3% had severe impairment.  The prevalence of any anxiety disorder among adolescents was higher for females (38.0%) than for males (26.1%).

The wide variety of anxiety disorders differ by the objects or situations that induce them, but share features of feeling excessively anxious, nervous or on edge. Anxiety disorders can interfere with sleep, concentration, job performance, school work, and relationships and cause fatigue.

People can experience different anxiety disorders,  including panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, specific phobia, social anxiety disorder (social phobia), adjustment disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and separation anxiety disorder.

Family history, stressful events, health problems, substance abuse and personality are some factors that can lead to a person developing anxiety. Difficult experiences in childhood, adolescence or adulthood are a common trigger for anxiety problems.

Symptoms for Generalized Anxiety Disorder Include

  • Excessive anxiety and worry (apprehensive expectation) about a number of events or activities.
  • Inability to control this worry
  • Restlessness or feeling keyed up or on edge
  • Fatigue
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Irritability, a short fuse
  • Muscle tension
  • Sleep disturbance (difficulty falling or staying asleep, or restless, unsatisfying sleep)

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health disorder that can cause trouble focusing or sustaining their attention on a single task or sitting still for extended periods of time, above-normal levels of hyperactive, and impulsive decisions and behaviors.

Signs and Symptoms of ADHD

ADHD symptoms vary from one person to the next and can vary based on age. The following are some of the symptoms that can present with ADHD:

  • Difficulty focusing or sustaining attention – zone out or look disinterested in what’s happening in the classroom or what another person is telling them.
  • Starting tasks and not finishing them – have difficulty following through on the ideas or activities that they start.
  • Avoidance – may avoid doing a mundane task because they are not interested in it or it’s too difficult.
  • Difficulty listening – “zone out” in classes or conferences.
  • Driving in a reckless manner – may become restless, and not think of the consequences on the road.
  • Trouble in their interpersonal relationships – Sometimes people with ADHD appear selfish in relationships. They may not seem to be listening to their partner or forget significant dates and cause their loved one to feel devalued.
  • Interrupting – A child will have trouble waiting for a person to finish before interjecting their opinion.
  • Waiting their turn – They’ll struggle with waiting in line for snack time or their turn to play on the monkey bars on the playground.
  • Being forgetful – A common symptom of ADHD being forgetful. They might not remember to take their backpack to school or to complete their homework assignment.

Bipolar disorder is a brain disorder that causes changes in a person’s mood, energy, and ability to function. People with bipolar disorder experience intense emotional states that typically occur during distinct periods of days to weeks to even years, called mood episodes. These mood episodes are categorized as manic/hypomanic (abnormally persistent happy or irritable mood) or depressive (feeling sad, hopeless). People with bipolar disorder generally have periods of neutral mood as well. You can think of the highs and the lows as two “poles” of mood, which is why it’s called “bipolar” disorder.

It is estimated that 4.4 percent of American adults have this disorder. The average age of onset is 25 years old. The exact cause of bipolar disorder isn’t known. Bipolar disorder commonly runs in families: 80 to 90 percent of individuals with bipolar disorder have a relative with bipolar disorder or depression. Environmental factors such as stress, sleep disruption, and drugs and alcohol may trigger mood episodes in vulnerable people. Though the specific causes of bipolar disorder within the brain are unclear, an imbalance of brain chemicals is believed to lead to dysregulated brain activity.

Bipolar Disorder Symptoms

In bipolar disorder, the dramatic episodes of high and low moods do not follow a set pattern. Someone may feel the same mood state (depressed or manic) several times before switching to the opposite mood.

Manic State

A distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated or irritable mood and abnormally and persistently increased activity or energy, lasting days, weeks, or even years.

“During the period of mood disturbance and increased energy or activity, three (or more) of the following symptoms (four if the mood is only irritable) are present to a significant degree and represent a noticeable change from usual behavior:

  • Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity.
  • Decreased need for sleep (e.g., feels rested after only 3 hours of sleep).
  • More talkative than usual or pressure to keep talking.
  • Flight of ideas or subjective experience that thoughts are racing.
  • Distractibility (i.e., attention too easily drawn to unimportant or irrelevant external stimuli), as reported or observed.
  • Increase in goal-directed activity (either socially, at work or school, or sexually) or psychomotor agitation (i.e., purposeless non-goal-directed activity).
  • Excessive involvement in activities that have a high potential for painful consequences (e.g., engaging in unrestrained buying sprees, sexual indiscretions, or foolish business investments).

Depressive State

  • Low, sad or depressed mood
  • Feeling guilty, worthless, hopelessness, helplessness
  • Feeling uninterested and lack of pleasure in activities that you used to enjoy
  • Lack of motivation or desire in doing things
  • Not wanting to get out of bed
  • Isolation and social withdrawal
  • Difficulty concentrating or with memory
  • Unintended weight loss or gain
  • Trouble with sleep
  • Fatigue or low energy levels
  • Feel better off dead or have intrusive thoughts about death or committing suicide

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that people sometimes develop in response to a traumatic event. Anyone who experiences trauma is at risk for PTSD, not only combat veterans. The key risk factor is experiencing a triggering event, but not everyone with trauma will develop PTSD. PTSD affects approximately 3.5 percent of U.S. adults every year, and an estimated one in 11 people will be diagnosed with PTSD in their lifetime. Women are twice as likely as men to have PTSD.

What can trigger PTSD?

Exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence in one (or more) of the following ways:

  • Directly experiencing the traumatic event (a violent crime, a natural disaster, a serious car accident, surgeries, witnessing, in person, the event(s) as it occurred to others.
  • Learning that the traumatic event(s) occurred to a close family member or close friend.
  • In cases of actual or threatened death of a family member or friend, the event(s) must have been violent or accidental.
  • Experiencing repeated or extreme exposure to aversive details of the traumatic event(s).

Signs & Symptoms of PTSD

The disorder often causes symptoms such as avoidance, intrusive thoughts, and flashbacks.

Here are some examples of symptoms of PTSD:

  • Intrusive thoughts or memories of the event
  • Flashbacks – feeling as if the traumatic event is happening all over again
  • Nightmares – scary dreams about the trauma
  • Avoiding places that remind the person of their trauma.
  • Persistent and exaggerated negative beliefs, thoughts or expectations about oneself, others, or the world.
  • Persistent negative feelings (e.g., fear, horror, anger, depression, hopelessness, guilt, or shame). Irritability and angry outbursts are common.
  • Isolation. Markedly diminished interest or participation in significant activities.
  • Feelings of detachment or estrangement from others.
  • Persistent inability to experience positive emotions (e.g., inability to experience happiness, satisfaction, or loving feelings).
